Gates TD Catch

This weekend marks the end of the NFL's regular season.  Seems like it just started!  Oh well, it just means the playoffs are starting soon and the first two rounds are the best two weeks in football; the Wildcard Weekend and then the Divisional Round!  To mark the occasion, here is a shot I took of Antonio Gates of the Chargers about to catch the football for a touchdown while Mike Mitchell of the Steelers and Danny Woodhead (Chargers) watch.

This shot was take from the nosebleeds at the opposite end of the field so you can see that the zoom is pretty significant on the DMC-FZ300.  This shot was not cropped for anything other than its aspect ratio.  It's a little noisy, but man, that thing can zoom!

Whoville Window

Every year, the town of Smithville, TX decorates Main St for Christmas with a different theme.  Last year the theme was "Whoville" and this storefront was decorated with a bunch of stuff from Dr. Suess' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".  Not sure what the theme was this year, but I'll bet it was great!

Qualcomm Stadium Fireworks

Today could be the last day the the San Diego Chargers play in San Diego.  It's totally understandable, too because that stadium sucks with a capital SUCK!  I'm sorry for the fans of San Diego because they would no longer have a local team. However, the Chargers need a decent stadium and Qualcomm is not very nice.  When we went to the Steelers v Chargers game, we had seats in the nosebleeds above one of the end zones. On the very last play of the game, the Steelers won on a touchdown run, but we missed it because we couldn't see the near end zone.  Why?  Because the stadium sucks!  It's time for a new one!

Anyway, here's a shot from when the Chargers kicked a field goal.  Whenever the Chargers score, they shoot off fireworks.  Kinda nice, but they really need a new stadium!

Grazing Bighorn Sheep

I took this in Jackson Hole on our ski trip a few years back.  There's so much to see in Jackson Hole other than just wonderful landscapes and ski slopes.  Lots of wildlife to look at and the elk/caribou preserve is pretty awesome, too.  You guys in the NXNW group should have a blast!  Can't wait to see your work!

Luckenbach Post Office

This the the Luckenbach Post Office.  I assume back in the day it was a real post office, but now it is pretty much a souvenir store.  They have some nice little trinkets in there from coffee cups to cowboy hats.  They also have three cats that hang out there; Dillon, Doc and Miss Kitty.  That's right, they are named after the characters from the old Gunsmoke TV show!  Cool, huh? You can see one of them chillin' on the porch bench in this shot, but I'm not sure which one it is...

Hays County Courthouse

This is a shot of the Hays County Courthouse in the heart of San Marcos, TX that I took last Saturday afternoon.  You see, Eileen went shopping with her mom Barb and her sister Annette so I took the opportunity to try and find something to photograph.  One of the places I ended up was the town square in San Marcos, the county seat of Hays County.  They have the courthouse decorated for Christmas and it looks pretty nice during the day, but I bet a twilight shot would look even better.  Maybe next year.

I hope you enjoy the photo and thanks for dropping by.  (As always, to view a larger version, click here.)

Hondo and Hats of Luckenbach

I went out to Luckenbach, TX last Saturday.  I've always wanted to go there since it has a sort of legendary history with Willie Nelson's 4th of July concerts and other things.  There's not much there other than a post office that has been converted to a souvenir store, a dance hall and a few other buildings.  Out behind the store is a stage and some picnic tables.  Looks like a fun place to see live music some time.  But, at the time I went, there was no live music and it was pretty dead.  So, I took some pictures of course!

This shot is from inside the post office.  It's a shot of some hats - obviously - along with a painting of Hondo Crouch.  He's quite a character and the guy who basically turned Luckenbach into the music venue that it is now, from what I understand.  He had quite an imagination and might have been a little off his rocker, in a good way.  Click here to read more...

This shot is a little perplexing to me.  I wanted it to be totally symmetrical, but the way everything lined up, I had to center the image based on the way the hats were arranged or with the light and the painting being in the center.  I opted for the latter and centered the shot on the painting and the light above.  I hope it worked, but you can tell me otherwise if you are so inclined.

Enjoy the photo and thanks for dropping by.  (Click here for a larger, more detailed version.)

Another Teton and Snake River BW

Now that the weather has finally turned cold - relatively speaking since I live in Texas - I thought it might be time to post a shot that looks cold.  This is another one from Jackson Hole, WY taken back in 2013 showing the Grand Tetons over the Snake River.  I like converting these types of mountain shots to black and white - I think they look more majestic or something that way.  I have a nice color version that I may put out sometime soon and then you can tell me which one you like better.  Until then, have a great day and thanks for dropping by!

Catalina Panorama

There are so many views of Avalon on Catalina when riding on the little golf carts around the island.  Towards the end of our self-guided tour, we stopped so I could get a panorama of most of the little town of Avalon.  When we go to places like this, I often wonder how much the homes go for.  I bet they go for a pretty penny here.

One other cool tidbit about Avalon that is pretty cool..  We stopped for a drink before we had to get back on the ferry and the bartender there was telling us about what living is like there.  Mostly it's boring, but he said there is absolutely no crime.  Except (there's always a caveat isn't there?), when the cruise ships come in. When people arrive from the cruise ships, they rent the golf carts, get drunk and then have accidents. That's the extent of the crime.  Interesting.  Oh, we turned the golf cart back in before we went to this bar, hehe! ;-)
